Spain, and Europe, need a new story about migration – there is some recognition of this in Spain but it remains to be seen how the country will put this into practice. Spaniards are relatively open towards migration, but the policy challenge for their government should be to allay, and not provoke, fears of migrant invasion.
The progress of the Spanish R & D system from the last decade has got stuck when the economical crisis started. The first budget cuts in R & D sector were applied in 2010, and nowadays the public R & D investment has stepped back to 2005 levels. The Spanish Young Researchers Federation (FJI-Precarios) strongly believes that, beyond raising public investment, a thoughtful R & D policy should be undertaken. In this position she is a kind of mediator of national interests. Her own story stands for many in Melilla, where converting is not a duty when women or men fall in love with different faiths. Sabrina Moh Abdelkader is divorced and remarried to a Christian. What might rather be a scandal in Germany in many Muslim circles is not a problem for her family: “I also brought a child from my first marriage into the second,” she says.
At the moment, refugees make up a significant portion of the EU’s population. The BBC shared a graph which indicates the number of refugee and migrant arrivals from 2014 to 2017 in Spain, Greece and Italy. Collectively, they make up more than a million individuals at the very least, and needless to say, it only shows a part of the whole picture.
