Madrid is the unknown beauty among the European capitals. Paris is associated with the Eiffel Tower or Notre-Dame Church, London with Westminster or the Tower Bridge, and Rome with the Colosseum or St Peter’s Basilica – and that even without ever having visited these cities. But what about Madrid?
It hardly evokes brain-storming associations. To some people the Prado may occur, but rather as an abstract concept of museum than a concrete appearance within their mind’s eye. Madrid reveals to the visitor only at second glance; it is waiting to be discovered. But once you have started the discovery, the three-million-inhabitants capital appears with all its attractiveness and its many different aspects: large boulevards, avenues and squares with magnificent monuments built during the Bourbon’s era, like the Royal Palace, the Alcalá Gate or the Town Hall; the Habsburg Madrid with the Main Square, peaceful corners and Tapas bars, or the cosmopolitan city of the Castellana Avenue.
Not forgetting that Madrid is a gem for art lovers; not only the three big collections Prado (old painting), Reina Sofía (modern) and Thyssen (both) are worth a visit, but also unknown museums like the former private collection Lázaro Galdiano or the residence of the painter Sorolla.Did I catch your interest?
