Elections in Catalonia. No need to elaborate except to confirm that although the main driving coalition party (4 members) known as the ‘Junts pel si’ (‘Together for the ‘Yes) in favor of independence from Spain lead by Artur Mas (CiU – right wing nationalists) together with Oriol Jorquera (ERC – Left wing republican), Union Democratica de Cataluña (UDC – Christian Democrat) and Moviment d’Ezquerés (MES – another Christian Democrat of sorts) obtained the largest number of votes but were not enough to form a government.

Spanish labour market improved considerably in 2014. Q4 14 data released by INE today on the main labour force survey (EPA) show that (seasonally adjusted) Spain’s unemployment rate dropped by over 2pp in 2014 to 23.7%, and employment increased by about 440k. The labour market participation rate inched up to 59.8% from 59.5%, and could be stabilising/reversing a downward trend since 2012. This bodes well for the future of the Spanish economy.

On average, employees in France work longer hours than in Germany: 44.3 hrs vs. 42.9 hrs for managers, and 36.2 hrs vs. 34.5 hrs for non-managers. (Eurostat, 2014). France is ranked sixth in the world for hourly labor productivity, ahead of Germany (7th) and the United Kingdom (13th). Compare France with other European countries and they can look pretty industrious, but guess what?
