Paris startups are a lot more focused on B2B than SV entrepreneurs. On the downside, the Paris startup community is “not much of a magnet for out of town entrepreneurs. France and Paris has a long way to go in this area to be able to compete with London and Berlin.”

GREECE: family business

For centuries, the backbone of the Greek economy has been small and medium-sized (SME) family enterprises. Children received early training in the tasks of the family business, while the orientation of their studies usually served business purposes. Today, the role of SMEs is still crucial, since an overwhelming proportion of Greek enterprises (exceeding 80%) remains small and medium-sized family enterprises.

SPANISH ECONOMY: Slowly getting better

Spanish labour market improved considerably in 2014. Q4 14 data released by INE today on the main labour force survey (EPA) show that (seasonally adjusted) Spain’s unemployment rate dropped by over 2pp in 2014 to 23.7%, and employment increased by about 440k. The labour market participation rate inched up to 59.8% from 59.5%, and could be stabilising/reversing a downward trend since 2012. This bodes well for the future of the Spanish economy. 

FRENCH ENTREPRENEURS: Paris is top!

On average, employees in France work longer hours than in Germany: 44.3 hrs vs. 42.9 hrs for managers, and 36.2 hrs vs. 34.5 hrs for non-managers. (Eurostat, 2014). France is ranked sixth in the world for hourly labor productivity, ahead of Germany (7th) and the United Kingdom (13th). Compare France with other European countries and they can look pretty industrious, but guess what?

In October 2015, the MBA&E at the HTW Berlin will start offering a new business engineering specialisation in Lean Management. The specialisation is built upon the programme’s tested business engineering curriculum, developed since 2007.
