Mainstream Clubs

One of the hippest places in town, the Passage used to be a pedestrian underpass before being converted to a club. Rather posh crowd, motto and music (mostly mainstream) depending on night. It is located directly underneath the Ring, the street that encircles Vienna’s inner district. It was originally built as a pedestrian underpass linking the national art history museum and the Hofburg Palace merely to ease the flow of traffic. That function was consigned to history long ago, and in 2003 the space was converted into the most-visited nightclub in Vienna.

The U4 to the west of the center is a very versatile venue. and :the city’s most legendary disco, whose illustrious past with concerts by Grace Jones, Nirvana and Prince can still be sensed. The best-known bouncer in the country, Conny De Beauclair, still ensures the right mix of people.

Alternative Clubs

Often rated “finest club in town”, the Flex definitely is a place that polarizes. Heaven for the alternative crowd and a scummy hole for the snobs… Try the popular London Calling (alternative/indie) on Wednesdays. Located right at the waterfront.

Being one of the most popular venues for retro and alternative music, the Chelsea is regularily packed on weekend nights. Good atmosphere, nice prices and relaxed door policy – thus somewhat really crowded! Small outdoor patio.
